Action on the Village Green - wins Award
'Action on the Green' won the Gold Award in the 'Small Sparks Project of the Year' category at the Chichester District Volunteer Awards 2008.
The third event of its kind, Action on the Green 2008 took place on the last Sunday in September on the village green in Lurgashall, near Petworth. Aimed principally at young people but with parents encouraged to participate, 49 children and at least a dozen participating adults took part. This year we invited our neighbouring village of Northchapel to join in the fun. This idea was taken up enthusiastically by the Head of Northchapel Primary School and by the organisers of Northchapel Sports Association.
As in previous years we received fantastic help from Ben Polhill of Chichester District Council and from Heide Evans of West Sussex County Council. The day's programme included Volleyball, Family Fun Football, Stoolball, Tag Rugby, a free BBQ and a Tug-o-war At the same time Archery tuition took place on the adjacent football field - which again proved very popular- and everyone was encouraged to run the 'Lurgashall Lap' at any time during the day. The Lurgashall Lap is a timed run around the village green, a distance of 362 metres - that's just 4m short of the famous 'Chariots of Fire' race. The ages of those who completed the Lap ranged from two years old to sixty five years!
The Youth Bus was in attendance, equipped for digital photography and printing. All the children had an opportunity to test their photographic skills and compete in the "Best Action Shot of the Day" competition.
Our aim of providing an opportunity for young people, their parents and relatives to participate in a day of fun and activity in our little village was certainly achieved.
'Action on the Green'© is a Lurgashall Village Hall Management Committee initiative.
